Changing work norms in the world of today
Why work online? In our current twenty-first century world, everything is increasingly moving into the internet domain. I mean everything. Today there are so many things that we used to only do offline that we can now do online.
We can now pay our bills, do our banking and our shopping. We can check the weather forecast, read the news, write letters and these days we’re even beginning to communicate with our appliances over the internet.
So it’s no surprise that some jobs are now moving online as well. But why work online anyways? Really, what are the possible benefits and what are the best jobs online that are available to us? We will examine and evaluate these benefits and advantages in this article.
First of all, let’s see if there are any disadvantages to working in a traditional job setting
Possible disadvantages of working at a traditional job
Long hours away from your spouse, your kids or other family members can seriously affect your relationships. Partners can grow apart. So much so that each partner in the relationship can get to a point where they feel like they don’t even know the other person anymore. This can affect intimacy, sexual desire and in turn, cause other serious complications
You may have to miss very important events in your children’s lives which can cause resentment. This time lost with your kids because you have to be away at work can never be regained and kids can begin to feel that you don’t love them because you’re just never there for them.
Rising transportation costs
With the price of gasoline always on the rise and no real breakthrough currently in sight for clean alternative fuel sources transportation will continue to be an ever increasing expense.
You inadvertently have to bear this fuel expense even if you just take the bus or a taxi to work because it is passed on to you in your fares, which will increase from time to time.
If you drive a car then there are also the additional costs to consider due to insurance expenses, the cost of parts that will go bad over time from just regular wear and tear.
Then in addition to the cost of getting to work for lots of people another negative feature is the time it takes to complete the commute. Worse if we have to deal with traffic pile ups on the way. Sometimes we are already tired by the time we walk through the door to start the day at work.
Lack of time to take care of personal issues
Here is another sore point. When you are employed away from home working in a company there is just never time for you to take care of the issues that we all have to deal with that are unrelated to the job.
Sometimes unexpected things really do happen that we need to take time to deal with. At home, there could be a sudden emergency situation. For instance, your heater could suddenly go on the blink. Requiring repairs ASAP because there could be a risk of fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and even air pollution if the problem isn’t rectified.
Or it could be something else that requires you to take time from work. Like a family health issue. A child could suddenly get sick, a parent or even you, requiring a trip to the doctor and time from work.
When you begin to work with a company you know from the instant you sign that contract that you will be earning a stipulated amount every week, fortnight or month. That’s it. Unless you get some overtime, get a raise or get a promotion you are stuck with that salary. Limits on money you can earn.
No real job security
Once upon a time when someone managed to land a good job in a reputable company they could practically consider themselves set for life. All the employee had to do was work diligently, consistently and professionally at his job and he or she for that matter could hold that job until it was time to retire.

Sadly in today’s world of mergers, downsizing, outsourcing, automation and corporate takeovers that fairy tale has all but ended, and there’s no happy ever after either. Real job security is basically a thing of the past. These days people are at work and with most of us not realizing that at any time they could have the rug pulled out from under them.
Ok, so all of the above is true but the question is still.
Why work online?
Research done in 2018 has shown that at least 70% of people globally are now working from home at least once per week.
Companies are now shifting focus to include telecommuting workers into their business model and their Human Resource pool. As with everything else they are evolving and beginning to embrace the inevitability of this new paradigm shift.
So why would you as an individual choose to work online. Here are a few possible reasons.
Advantages of working from home
Having a more flexible schedule will mean that you are able to schedule your work time around other things that are also important in your life. This will give you the flexibility to schedule your work time to the hours that you find to be most productive for you.
So if you find that nights are the best times when your creative juices are flowing or your concentration can be at peak levels etc. You can choose to work at that time or any other time you decide.
This flexibility also means you can deal with emergencies that may crop up without having to think “oh what is the boss going to say”
If you previously had a job where you had a long, boring or tedious commute then you are going to love working from home.
Your only commute is going to be from your bedroom probably still dressed in your pajamas to wherever you have set up a work space. Bear in mind that said work space doesn’t have to be an elaborate mock-up of your office at your previous corporate job.
A simple work desk and a comfortable chair will suffice. So should you choose to work online you can expect to save a lot of money on gas mileage and on parts as well for your car. If you usually commute by bus or taxi, then the savings will be the fares.
More time with family
When you work from home an immediate benefit is that you get to spend more time with your family. You get to be there when your kids leave for school in the morning and come home in the afternoons. You can help with homework etc.
You have more time for your spouse and other family members and you no longer have to miss those special family occasions because you are able to schedule your work time around these important moments in your life.
It may take some time to achieve the perfect balance between your work while at home and family time, but you will find that balance and you will see that the family benefits far outweigh what could be achievable if you work at a traditional commuting job.
When you work from home it’s quite possible to have greater job satisfaction. After all, you get to choose the work that you do. There’s no boss above you shoving undesirable tasks at you. No. You have the freedom to select the projects or tasks that you want to undertake. Especially if you’re using one of the online Job Boards like these ones here.
The increased sense of control over what you do that comes with working from home will translate into greater satisfaction and less stress. There is no longer the necessity of having to deal with problematic co-workers, senseless and unnecessary tasks and administrative hassles.
This can lead to better focus and concentration on the task at hand and by extension better output in terms of jobs completed.
And best of all. You can have the satisfaction of firing that boss of yours.
Increased Income potential
Whereas an employee working for a company has a fixed salary. There is no limit to the amount of money you can make as a self-employed, work at home freelancer. If you are really good at what you do then you can charge premium prices for your work.
Be advised though that unless you are very well known for the work you do it may take some time to build your business up to this point. However, if you continually hone your skills and build your portfolio of successfully completed jobs you will earn that highly sought-after status in your field and then the sky will be the limit as far as how much you can earn
So now that we’ve seen that working online is a viable option we can turn our attention to determining what are the best jobs online.
