Top online Payment Gateways

Paypal is one of the most popular gateways available today.  It’s an online payment processor that caters to online businesses, vendors, auction houses and individuals worldwide.

As a PayPal user, you are able to send money to others, make payments for online purchases and pay bills.

For the Freelancer who chooses to use Paypal to accept payments. It means that you are able to transfer funds from your Paypal account to your bank account or credit card.  You can also apply for a Paypal pre-paid card which you can use to withdraw cash directly from an ATM in your country.

Merchants who use the service are able to accept payments for goods and services by debit or credit card right there on their website.

Paypal is a safe gateway to use to either send or receive money.  There are features in place for customer security and your data is also encrypted for additional security.

There are small fees related to using the services of Paypal whether as an Individual or as a business.  The fees associated are presented in detail on the Paypal fees page and you can view that page here.

Payoneer is a company, established in 2005 in the financial services industry.  Their business is the provision of online money transfers and digital payment services to users both in the United States and in over 200 other countries internationally.

The company promises to maintain a secure environment in order to ensure the customer’s peace of mind.  To achieve this they employ data encryption methods and other security features.

To receive payments through Payoneer you have the option of having the funds sent directly to your bank account, loaded onto a debit card provided by Payoneer or put into an e-wallet.  Also provided by the company.

Listed among the companies that make use of the service to make payments are some industry leaders like Upwork, Google, Fiverr, Freelancer, and Amazon.

They use the services to make mass payouts, both locally in the USA and internationally.

Be prepared to pay fees for using the service.  Including bank transfers and ATM withdrawals.  You can find the full fee structure here.   Payoneer is a really good payment gateway and the only downside I can see are the fees that have to be paid.

Skrill is another available Payment Gateway.  This one was founded in 2001 and at that time was known as MoneyBookers.

At the time of its inception, this company was only involved in processing gambling winnings.  However, It has evolved somewhat since that time and in 2011 changed its name toSkrill.

The current business model while still allowing some support for
gambling also allows for payments and low-cost international money
transfers to be completed online.

Skrill is a very good option, however, the downsides as I see it are:

You can receive small payments, but until you provide proof of
identification such as a scanned copy of your ID card or your passport,
you will not be able to receive any large payment.

There is also a one time fee charged each time you withdraw funds to your bank account.

At the time of writing, you won’t be able to receive payments using Skrill if you live in one of these countries.

Stripe is relatively new to the e-commerce business, having been launched in 2011.  So far the company provides services in 26 countries.  Some of which are Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Portugal, the UK, and the USA.

The process of receiving payments from clients using Stripe is a bit different from that of processors like Paypal, Payoneer etc.  In order to make payments, your clients will have to use the Stripe Checkout system

Stripe is secured and the security protocols used by the company include the use of SSL security and data encryption to safeguard your data.

This one is another good processor, that I’ve actually used myself in the past, but at this time Payza seems to have been taken offline by the authorities.

Taken Offline

The buzz is that it was taken down due to allegations of money laundering made by the authorities in the USA.   This was one of the better payment gateways at the time when I was using it so I will keep watch to see exactly how this plays out.

The word Escrow means a bond, deed, or other document kept in the custody of a third party and taking effect only when a specified condition has been fulfilled.  This is the model that’s being used by

They collect the funds from the client and operate as a third party, holding said funds until both the client and freelancer are satisfied.  Then and only then are the funds disbursed.

The company is currently owned by chairman and CEO.

With this system, the freelancer should be able to have peace of mind from knowing that his payment is held in the hands of a third party that will deposit funds to his bank account, Paypal account or to a debit card once the work has been completed
