Finding a niche for your online business

Find your nicheAre you considering starting your own online business?  Maybe as an affiliate marketer or to sell your own items or even as a blogger.  If your answer to that question is yes, then one of the important things you need to think about is the niche that you are going to choose to go into.

For some of us, this can seem like a very daunting task.  Usually, because we are overthinking the whole issue.   Your entire business venture will be tied to the niche that you select as this is one of the cornerstones that you will be growing your budding business on, but there’s no reason to stress yourself about it.

Start Your Own Online Business

Someone totally new to the idea of netrepreneurship might be wondering at this point exactly what the heck I am talking about.  So let’s give a bit of a definition.  The word niche, when used in terms of a business on the internet, refers to a specific, targeted segment of the online market.  That specific audience that you will be targeting in your internet business.

How to find your niche

As I mentioned earlier choosing the segment for your business doesn’t have to be a huge task.  One way to do this is to look at the things that you are keenly interested in, the things that you are passionate about, and the hobbies that you have.

Make a list of these things.

Then from this list choose the one that you have the greatest interest in.  The one you have the most passion for.  It will probably also be the one that you are most knowledgeable about.

This choice can then be the segment of the market that you create your business in.  It can be said that success often follows passion and your keen interest could mean that you achieve success much faster.

Bear in mind though, that there are no bad segments.  Anything that you choose can be valid and result in you making money in your business.  There is absolutely no possibility of “choosing a wrong niche”

But what if you don’t have any burning passions, hobbies or interests.

Not to worry.  You can still find a market segment to be the core of your online business.

Is there something that you have wanted to learn and never got around to getting started?

Or maybe there is a need that you see.  Some product or service that you realize would help people and yet it is not available.

If your answer is yes, then these represent possible niche ideas.

You don’t have to be an expert in the area you select.  No, you don’t have to have a ton of knowledge about the area.  You can become an expert in any segment of the market that you select.

Another method you can use to find ideas involves doing a bit of research with Google online search tool.  To use this method you need to come up with a starting point.  For instance, let us use the word “diet” as our starting point.

Go to Google search and type the word diet into the search window.  You will see that Google now gives you a suggestion listing of possible ideas.

Diet plans could represent a possible viable market segment.  Diet foods could as well.

Even if you can’t come up with any ideas at all as to what to use as a starting point.  You can simply type a letter into Google and look for any viable ideas from the suggestions.

Spend some time going through the alphabet letter by letter and making notes of the suggestions you find interesting.

Or type a combination of letters to generate other ideas.  Such as.

This whole alphabet soup idea might sound a little bit silly and maybe even childish at first but what you come up with may just knock your socks off.

Almost anything that you can think of can be a niche.  As long as there are people expressing an interest in it and searching for it online.

You should now see that doing the necessary research to help you choose the market segment that you are going to be involved in is a really important precursor to you getting started with building out your website.  This is a very good success tip for working online and you can find other good tips for doing business online right here.

Next Steps

When you have finished selecting the niche that you want to use for your online business.  The next logical step is to create your website, and then start placing relevant content on that website.  This involves doing some research into the keywords that you are going to want to use on that website.

What are keywords?

The most basic definition of a keyword is  A word or a phrase that people will type into the search engines such as Google in order to find what they are searching for on the internet.  Determining and optimizing a list of keywords for your website can help with getting your website to appear in a prime position on the 1st page of the search results when people do a search on that particular keyword.

The method that is used to define and optimize keywords is called keyword research.

This entire process from choosing your niche which we looked at earlier, to creating your website, keyword research, content creation, search engine rankings and much more are dealt with in the free 10 lessons intensive preliminary course on how to create and run your own profitable internet business.

Yes, it is impossible to choose a wrong niche because there are no wrong niches. It becomes a wrong niche if one’s passion for that niche dies off or gradually fades away and even if this happens, it still isn’t a bad niche. It is best to choose a niche we are passionate about and would be excited to learn about moving forward. So we don’t need to get started as an expert but with passion for the niche, we will be willing to carry out research on various topics, learn new stuffs and by so doing we gradually grow to be experts in our niche choice. This is exactly what is happening to me right now and I have seen it happen to many persons…

Honestly, ever since I made the decision to create an income source online, selecting the ideal niche has been my biggest challenge. I’ve heard that selecting the wrong niche can be very devastating to your efforts and it will usually be a while before you even discover the mistake. This has made me very critical of a selection but it has also made me even nmore confused than before. I have to admit, this post seems to provide me with a lot of clarity. I can already think of at least 3 ideas that I can further research.

Thanks for the insight

Thanks for the awesome article about starting an online business.  The fact that someone can get started with $0 out of pocket is amazing.  So many people think they need to have money to make money.  There’s no question, that makes it much easier, but it’s also possible to start with little or no money if someone is willing to do the work–lots of work, and who’s willing to adjust accordingly.  Keep up the good work.  Take care.
