Are you looking for ways to improve your online presence and in so doing better your business?

In this post i’m going to show you step by step how to quickly setup Google Webmaster Tools, which is now known as Google Search Console for your WordPress website.  This Google Console along with Google Analytics are Google tools that i use on a regular basis to give me insights on what is taking place with my websites and the traffic that the sites receive.

Both organic traffic and otherwise.  But what are we actually talking about when we say Google Search Console?

What is Google Webmaster Tools?

Now renamed to Google Search Console, it is a free online platform designed to help webmasters to measure their websites performance on the search engines and provide a suite of tools that can help them to improve and maintain their position in the search engine results for the keywords that they are trying to rank for.

It is a good tool to use along with Google Analytics.

While Analytics will give you an inside look at how your website visitors are finding your site and how they are engaging and interacting with it, the Console will show you how the Search Engines are interacting with the site.

From the Console you can see how many impressions your site is getting in the search engines by either keyword or by page.  You can also see what the click through rate from the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) is for your site.

The data that is provided to you via the Console can definitely aid you in improving the level of visibility that your site receives in the Search engines.

Google Search Console

In order to begin to use the Console to get access to reports on site performance, click rates, mobile usability and much more you first need to link Search Console to your website.  So let’s take a look at the process to do that.

Linking Google Search Console to your website

Remember that Search Console and Google Webmaster Tools are one and the same.  With that said, here are the steps to link this Google tool to your website.

Before you undertake the steps to quickly add this to your website you are going to need a Google account or a Gmail account.  If you already have one of these that great.  You’re ready for the process.

However, if you do not then i need you to go to the Gmail website and create a Gmail account for yourself.  After you’ve completed that and logged in to your new account, come right back here so we can continue.

Ok now that you’re logged into your Gmail account or Google account let’s get started.

Step 1 – Create a Search Console Account

The first thing you need to do now is go to the Search Console page.  You can get there in 2 ways.  You can get there by going directly to the Search Console page or you can access from the Webmaster Tools page.  Then click on Search Console  Either route gets you where you need to be.

Right now you should be looking at a page that’s asking for your email address in order to continue on.

So now we’re going to create your Google Search Console account.  Enter your email and click on Next.

Sign In To Google Search Console

Google has added some new features to the console recently.  So as this is your very first time accessing it you are probably going to see the following screen.  Click Start to go to the Search Console for the first time.

Welcome to Google Search Console

Link your Console Account to Your Website

You have now completed the Google Console Login and are now at the Dashboard.   From here click on Add property.  At this point we are going to add your website information.  The following window now opens.

Add property to Google Search Console

Enter your website address on the right hand side, under the URL prefix tab.  Then click on Continue.  After you’ve done that we are going to choose a method to verify ownership of your website.  You can only get Search Console data on websites that you own or otherwise have administrator rights on.

However you are allowed to have a maximum of 1000 websites, also referred to as Domain Properties on your account.

You are now at the Verify Ownership window.  Here you need to choose a method to verify your ownership of the website.  We will use the quickest and easiest method available.  So click on the HTML Tag option.  You will see it in the Other Verification Methods section.  Copy the text you see between the quotes after content=

Example: content=”copy_the_text_you_see_in_this_area” />

Here is a picture of what i’m talking about.

So as i said.  Copy all the text between the “” and paste it into Notepad or something like that.  We are going to use it a bit later.  Do not close the Console.  We are not through with it yet.

On to the next step

Download and install All In One SEO plugin on your site.   This plugin is another great tool that works along side our Webmaster Tools and Google Console.  This plugin helps you to optimize your site for best SEO results on the web.

It does this by providing a set of other tools that you use to place keywords, create No Follow links, create SEO descriptions and a host of other things.  All geared to making your site more SEO friendly to the search engines.

Let’s get started with All In One SEO.  Go to your website Admin console and log in as an administrator.  Once you’re logged in look on the left hand side of the WordPress Dashboard and click on Plugins.  Then do the following.

Go here and follow the instructions to quickly and easily install All In One SEO.

Install All In One SEO plugin

After you have completed that installation, you click on All In One General Settings from the dashboard and scroll down to where you see Google Search Console.

Paste the html code that you had copied previously from the Search console verification page and paste it into the corresponding field of All In One SEO.  You will see the field has the same name Search Console.  So paste the code there and then scroll down to the end of the General settings page and click on Update Options

You can now log out of the admin area of your WordPress website, and move on to the final step.

Go back to the console page you had left open and click on the verify option.

You will know that everything is complete and you have successfully setup Google Webmaster Tools when you see the ownership verification page displayed as below.
